Autumn is one of my favourite month’s to travel. As summer in the UK has gone and the shorter days are here, it’s often the perfect time to get away and escape. If you prefer to avoid the busier holiday periods, like me, then Autumn travel is great. At the time of writing, there are a few options still possible for UK travellers to visit, which avoid isolating on your return. Unfortunately the guidance is forever changing.
Usually I would be away right now, but instead I’m travelling vicariously through my past trips from this time of year – a few of which are linked below. I’d love to hear any other recommendations of Autumn travel ideas.
Lake District, UK
If you are prepared for a visit to the Lake District in the UK, at any time of year, then you will be prepared for the Autumn weather – which can be wet. However, this still usually brings with it some brighter weather as well. Walkers will enjoy the endless options for hiking, and the fresh air and green space in the lakes but there are many other things to see and do when you visit. Check out my Things to do in the Lake District post for ideas.
Lake Garda, Italy
I last visited Lake Garda during it’s annual marathon, in October – this year it’s cancelled. Despite the event, at this time of year it wasn’t busy. The weather remained pleasant (albeit a bit chilly in the evenings) and most places were in fact quiet. If you enjoy walking/hiking or cycling then this area offers some great routes as well as some fine dining out of season. The best part is that there is always somewhere to park and the prices are reasonable compared to the summer months. Read more from my visit here.
Cyprus
The temperature remains warm in Cyprus during October, although cooler than the peak heat months of the summer. So it’s perfect for those that like to mix the sun with exploring historical sights. However, you must be prepared to travel around the island to make the most of it. Check out my post: Cyprus beyond the beaches for some suggestions and recommendations.
Cuba
Foreign tourists can visit Cuba, later this month, from a number of entry points, excluding Havana. It seems more and more is slowly opening up including guest houses. I know a local who offers accommodation and tours, if you are thinking of a visit and need to know exactly what to expect, along with some up to date recommendations. Feel free to get in touch for more info. If you’re just after a few tips to start planning a visit take a look at my Cuba visit tips post or read thoughts from my first impressions.
