Play games to experience travel

Whilst we all continue with social distancing and wonder when we might be able to travel again, I’ve been looking at other ways to experience travel at home. From taking virtual tours to getting creative from my travels, I’ve also found time to have a bit of fun, and play games to experience travel in a different way.

Here are some game ideas to test your knowledge, learn something, inspire your future travel plans, or just pass the time.

Quizzes

Right now, virtual quizzes are the replacement for British pub quiz culture here in the UK. You can find all sorts of travel themed quizzes online, especially when searching on social media. Being able to connect online means, you can play along with people all over the world and even in other languages.

Taking part in a quiz is a great way to entertain all the family and get people together whilst adhering to the the social distancing rules. Why not take part in a multiplayer quiz or conduct your own with My Quiz. If you prefer something less interactive and involved, there any plenty of quizzes available online, which will keep you entertained for a few hours.

Card and board games

There are numerous travel themed card and board games. Here are a few recommendations:

Top Trumps Wonders of the World
Backpacker
Ticket to Ride

Some card and board games are difficult to play with friends and family from a distance, as each person will need to have their own game or pack. There are a number of games playable via apps on both Android and iOS for smartphones and tablets. Or how about playing games online, although you might need to get a bit technical – this post should help.

Hunts

The obvious choice for me here would be geocaching – but that’s only possible if you can get out and get some fresh air. Maybe incorporate some geocaching into your daily exercise. Or how about a scavenger hunt round your neighbourhood.

If you can’t go outside, then why not set a treasure or scavenger hunt indoors. There are many ideas available to download for free online, but why not make your own. Set a travel or alternative theme and find a way to explore your home or local area.

Computer games

I’m not a gamer, but video games are definitely a way to inspire travel. Check out this post for some ideas.

The Assassins Creed series of games involves fighting in and exploring historical places. If you fancy travelling through Renaissance period Rome or Damascus during the Crusades, for example, these games will appeal. There are several others worth checking out.

If you’re more of a creative gamer, Cities: Skylines, which is similar to Sim City, allows you to create your own city. Why not recreate your home town or another city in the world.

The above is just a few ideas. It seems there are so many ways to play games to experience travel – please do share any other ideas you have.
